St George's Shopping Centre recognises the impact it has on its environment and works progressively to follow responsible business practice in all facets of its operation.
As an existing structure developed over forty years our focus is managing responsible practices in the upgrade, replacement and refurbishment of existing facilities as and when opportunities arise.
Shop refits, and building repairs and maintenance provide many opportunities for the introduction of energy saving technology whilst also managing waste by tenants and contractors.
The centres heating, lighting and CO2 levels are computer controlled to minimise energy consumption and maximise heat recovery. Each shop unit within the centre is assessed for energy performance as and when it becomes vacant.
The majority of lighting used in the centre is low energy with further replacement plans in progress introducing LED systems for even better performance.
Water usage is controlled in our public toilet facilities through activity sensors, automatic taps and measured flush volumes.
The centre produces 250 tonnes of waste from over 100 retail businesses. Currently 55% of waste is recycled, We constantly review new opportunities as waste process facilities are developed by specialist waste service businesses.
We encourage our shoppers to recycle re-useable goods associated with our trade by providing recycle bins for key products. These products are channelled through St Catherine's Hospice in support of their opportunity to benefit commercially.
